Someone’s home is their haven from the outside world. As the seasons change and it gets colder out, there are many factors that can help or hinder someone’s safe haven. During the winter months there are many steps you can take to ensure home safety; including the ones listed here:

1. Always have working flashlight on hand, make sure batteries work
2. Have extra batteries on hand
3. Have a proper supply of canned goods
4. Keep heaters away from flammable items
5. Make sure kerosene or propane heaters have proper ventilation
6. Do not run car in a closed garage
7. Make sure decks, steps, and sidewalks are clear of hazards and in good repair
8. All exits from home should be clear of snow and ice
9. Shovel snow in small loads and if possible use a snow blower
10. Keep hands and feet away from snow blower blades
11. Do not start snow blower in garage
12. Keep extra gas stored in a safe place in your garage
13. Keep spare parts for essential tools or house hold equipment on hand
14. Make sure your tires are properly inflated
15. Keep the gas in your car filled to half a tank or more

Following all or most of these steps can ensure a safe and enjoyable winter season.
